Juror: Tom Paiva

Showcase theme is missing
As the sun sets, a whole new world of photographic opportunities presents itself.  Buildings, streets and time lapse take on a different light at night. But don't stop there - ever hear of "Night life"? Carnivals?  Animals? People? Theater? There is a voyeuristic feel to night images, the viewer senses that they are observing life from the shadows.  Urban lights create high drama -  colors intensify and shadows loom. In the country, things become scary and still.  Is there just a hint of the sunset left?  Time lapse can create fantastic swirls of lights creating abstract compositions.  Juror Tom Paiva chose 49 images for exhibition at the Vermont Photo Space Gallery.

Juror's Statement

When I review a night photograph, one of the most important criteria is the balance of light from the extreme highlights to the deepest shadows, regardless of whether it is b+w or color.  This tonality is important to keep the viewers interest.  A night shot should have a sense of mystery and the composition should make your eye move around the image.  Of course, it must be technically perfect to make the grade. Juror: Tom Paiva

Tom Paiva has been a commercial photographer for over 20 years, specializing in industrial and architectural subjects. Night photography has been a passion for him for over 25 years and always tries to incorporate it in his commercial work. He has lead many night photography workshops and has taught photography at the college level.

Tom co-founded The Nocturnes, a group of night photographers who had a landmark exhibit in San Francisco in 1991.  His book, Industrial Night, contains 46 color images of industrial settings at night and Tom has over 70 cover images for various Trade Magazines to his credit.

The Darkroom Gallery is all about giving contemporary photographers the opportunity to have their work evaluated by a qualified juror for display in our Vermont gallery with very little expense or hassle. We provide free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work and retain all rights to their photographs. This makes it very easy and inexpensive to get your work on display.
